Getting Ready for Sunday | 9/16/2018
We are gathering together on Sunday, September 16 at 4pm for the Holy Eucharist. This is a special commemoration of the Holy Cross. Take a little time as we approach Sunday, read below, and prepare your heart for worship.
Collect (prayer) for Holy Cross Day
Almighty God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ was lifted high upon the cross that he might draw the whole world to himself: Mercifully grant that we, who glory in the mystery of our redemption, may have grace to take up our cross and follow him; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.
The general theme to unite the prayer (or collect) for Holy Cross Day, the lessons, and the sermon is Adore the Cross, Embrace the Mind of Christ. The central texts of the sermon are from Philippians 2:5-11 and John 12:31-36a. The following insight from John Stott will help us prepare to adore the Cross and embrace the mind of Christ, for he has embraced us with his mercy and grace.
“Far from offering us flattery, the cross undermines our self-righteousness. We can stand before it only with a bowed head and a broken spirit. And there we remain until the Lord Jesus speaks to our hearts his word of pardon and acceptance, and we, gripped by his love, and full of thanksgiving, go out into the world to live our lives in his service.”
-John Stott, The Cross of Christ (p. 12)
