Personal and Family Worship for the Eighteenth Sunday after Trinity | 10/11/2020

Reflection on the Word in our Worship

1 The Lord is my shepherd; *

therefore I can lack nothing.

2 He shall feed me in green pastures *

and lead me forth beside the waters of comfort.

-Psalm 23:1-2 A few words from St. Augustine of Hippo highlight the care the Good Shepherd has for his sheep.

The pastures that this good shepherd has prepared for you, in which he has settled you for you to take your fill, are not various kinds of grasses and green things, among which some are sweet to the taste, some extremely bitter, which as the seasons succeed one another are sometimes there and sometimes not. Your pastures are the words of God and his commandments, and they have all been sown as sweet grasses. These pastures had been tasted by that man who said to God, “How sweet are your words to my palate, more so than honey and the honeycomb in my mouth!” (St. Augustine, Sermon 366.3)

The Collect of the Day

O God, our refuge and strength, true source of all godliness: Graciously hear the devout prayers of your Church, and grant that those things which we ask faithfully, we may obtain effectually; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Psalm 23

1 The Lord is my shepherd; *

therefore I can lack nothing.

2 He shall feed me in green pastures *

and lead me forth beside the waters of comfort.

3 He shall refresh my soul *

and bring me forth in the paths of righteousness

for his Name’s sake.

4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

I will fear no evil, *

for you are with me; your rod and your staff comfort me.

5 You shall prepare a table before me,

in the presence of those who trouble me; *

you have anointed my head with oil, and my cup shall be full.

6 Surely your goodness and mercy

shall follow me all the days of my life, *

and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
