Personal and Family Worship for the Twenty-Second Sunday after Trinity | 11/08/2020

Reflection on the Word in our Worship

But let all those who seek you be joyful and glad in you; *

and let all who delight in your salvation say always,

“The Lord be praised.”

-Psalm 70:4

Seeking the Lord is an indispensable priority for any and all who would trust him and enjoy his help. Two additional Scriptures on seeking come to mind. "You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart" (Jeremiah 29:13). And Jesus' words in the Sermon on the Mount, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened" (Matthew 7:7-8).

The Collect of the Day for each Sunday is a reliable help for learning to seek the Lord. And with the particular stresses and strains of this season of life in North America, the collect for Trinity 21 and the Collect for Trinity 22 are providentially apt.

The Collect for Trinity 21

Grant us, Lord, not to be anxious about earthly things, but to love things heavenly; and even now, as we live among things that are passing away, to hold fast to those that shall endure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Collect for Trinity 22

O God, whose blessed Son came into the world that he might destroy the works of the devil and make us children of God and heirs of eternal life: Grant that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves as he is pure; that, when he comes again with power and great glory, we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Psalm 70

1 Hasten, O God, to deliver me; *

make haste to help me, O Lord.

2 Let them be ashamed and confounded who seek after my life; *

let them be turned back and put to confusion who wish me evil.

3 Let them be soon brought to shame *

who cry over me, “Aha! Aha!”

4 But let all those who seek you be joyful and glad in you; *

and let all who delight in your salvation say always,

“The Lord be praised.”

5 As for me, I am poor and in misery;*

hasten to me, O God.

6 You are my helper and my deliverer; *

O Lord, do not tarry.
